Your block paving driveway installation process

Correct preparation is fundamental to a quality driveway installation whether traditional or permeable paving, thorough base preparation will ensure the paving appearance, quality and longevity. Time and preparation has to be invested and cutting corners is a false economy for the customer and to our guarantee.
The existing ground is skillfully excavated with a mechanical digger or where not possible by hand. The driveway is excavated to a minimum depth of 200mm to the finished driveway height. Our experience and care takes into account all the utility services, drainage and falls for the finished paving.
All spoil is carefully removed with no mess and a minimum of inconvenience to both the customers and neighbours property and the public highway. As part of our environmental policy our environmental commitment is to endeavour to use contractors that recycle all topsoil and concrete .All waste removal is done through us as licenced waste carrier or an equivalent licensed contractor.
Drainage is of key importance to the finished paving ensuring all surface water is adequately removed from the driveway and no flooding is allowed .Following design plans any soak-away when required is constructed along with the installation of all underground drainage. Sustainable Urban Drainage systems with permeable block paving can be installed.
Prior to the base preparation excavations are checked for size, depth and suitability including the removal of any soft spots requiring infilling with additional base to ensure future stability.
Base layer
|
A stabilizing membrane is laid onto the newly excavated sub soils, acting as a barrier preventing the dispersal of the sub base into the existing soil, whilst allowing water to pass through. This shouldn’t be confused with an inferior weed membrane.
Type 1 MOT base is installed onto the membrane ensuring a minimum depth of 100mm when compacted. The sub base is critical to paving as the main load bearing layer for the driveway. We carefully ensure the Type 1 MOT is graded correctly reflecting the final profile of the paving ensuring the appropriate falls and levels as required for driveways and eliminating the potential of water pooling on the final block paved driveway.
Once laid and levelled correctly this is then compacted using a vibrating wacker plate to consolidate the Type 1 MOT with the sub soil base. This must be done effectively to aid drainage and prevent settlement the last thing you want is to have wheel ruts and subsidence appear in your driveway a few months after it was installed!
Bedding layer

A 50mm depth of sharp sand is installed on top of the compacted Type 1 MOT base. The sand is again carefully and skillfully graded to the profile of the final paving and compacted using a vibrating wacker plate. It is the final screeding that reflects the finished profile of the paving. The screeding is carried out by skilled and expert work force to ensure the correct levels, falls and gradients for the new paving which will be carefully laid onto it.

Laying Paving

Only after the thorough and time consuming preparation of your driveway installation is it finally ready to receive the block paving. The bricks of your choice are laid in the pattern of your chosen design and feature. The bricks are mixed from different pallets allowing for any colour differential throughout the driveway.
Cabling and ducting is installed if required for lighting.
Outside edging blocks are set on a wet concrete mix. Kerbs and kerbing blocks are laid to your specification on a wet concrete mix and haunched eliminating all future movement of the driveway.
Steps are laid using either a kerbing system (of which there are many designs or we can design a bespoke step if required), or built using bricks on the risers with block paving to the treads.
Recessed manhole covers are laid to replacing old steel covers and disguising the presence of manholes and inspection chambers.
Final cutting in and wacking

The cutting of the block paving is carried out using a petrol operated diamond blade cutter to ensure a high quality finish.
One last check of the alignment and quality of the bricks is carried out in the snagging prior to the completed block paving being compacted with kiln dried sand using a vibrating wacker plate.
The last thing we do is ensure all rubbish is taken away from your site by us (with our waste carrier licence credentials!).
